Users are able to choose what clothes to wear, where to chat, background music, etc. The live aspect both limits and enhances the users’ identity.

Computer Games: But are they Art?

How does Adams define art? Do you agree with his definition?

In defining art, Adams first refers to Encyclopedia Britannica’s definition of art, as it claims there are many different types of art. Continuing with this definition, Adams breaks art into different types including:
            -Literary Arts: writing and drama- categorized by presence of the narrative (includes film and television) and object/method
            - Fine Arts: sculpture, painting, music and dance
            - Decorative Arts: wallpaper, fabrics and furnishings
            - Architecture/Industrial Design
In his definition, Adams clarifies that “the boundaries between art and non-art are not hard and fast; there is a gray area” (Adams, 255).
Adams continues to explain that art must:
-       Contain content
-       Have an aesthetic
-       Have ideas
-       Make you feel things
-       Not formulaic
Although I am not really experienced in art, I have to agree with Adam’s definition of the word. Nowadays people have different experiences and beliefs and are all so unique that art to one person may be trash to another. Having one concrete definition of art would be very limiting, as it would restrict new or even old things/pieces to be considered as art. In addition, this wide/vague definition of art allows different people and cultures to have different opinions of art. If the world was going to define art according to one culture, the art of art would be lost. Adam’s definition of art gives artists/regular people the opportunity to create any type of art. Since art gives artists and regular people the freedom to express oneself, an open definition of art allows for the freedom of expression through art.

According to Adams, what is needed for videogames to be considered as art?

According to Adams, a videogame must fulfill 7 criteria points.
1.     The videogame must look beyond ‘fun and games.’
a.     Adams uses adults and theme parks to explain this point; he argues that adults don’t usually spend time at theme parks and aren’t really entertained by the usual emotions of ‘funny’ or horror’ so for a videogame to be considered an art, the videogame must go further than just creating entertainment or a good laugh.
2.     The videogame needs an aesthetic.
a.     Adams explains that for a videogame to be considered an art, it must be ‘harmonious,’ or become like a second-nature. Adams asks the questions: “Is it smooth, easy and natural?” of videogames in considering them as an art.
3.     The videogame developers must experiment.
a.     Adams argues that creators cannot just stick with things they know- they must try new mediums, challenge themselves as well as the player/viewer. By doing this, developers have the opportunity to change the way we look at videogames.
4.     The videogame must challenge the player.
a.     Adams states “Great art challenges the viewer. It demands the viewer to grow, expand his or her mind, see things they have never seen before, think things they have not thought before”(261). For videogames to be considered an art, they must also challenge the viewer to grow and develop in unexpected ways.
5.     The videogame awards’ must change.
a.     Adams argues that the current awards for videogames are about craft and not art and that they should be switched; “Game awards must honor aesthetic content, not merely technological prowess” (262).
6.     The videogame must have critics, not just reviewers.
a.     Adams argues that currently, videogames have no critics, and to be considered an art, videogames must have critics. “Real critics bring to their profession not just a knowledge of the medium they are discussing, but wide reading and an understanding of aesthetics and the human condition. An art form requires not just reviewers that can compare with one work with another, but critics who can discuss the meaning of a game in a larger context” (262).
7.     The videogame requires and artist.
a.     Adam claims that the artists’ name must be ‘household names’ and known around the world; “For games to be taken seriously as an art form, the people who make them must receive adequate public recognition” (264).

The Ethics of Digital Games

According to the film, Gamer Revolution, what are the pros and cons of playing videogames for individuals and societies?

As seen in the film, there are many different pros and cons of playing videogames. For individuals, videogames gives them something more than a book. Numerous people stated in the film that videogames provide players with the role of an "active participant" while providing color and motion while a book is simply black and white where the reader is an recipient. In addition, videogames provide a medium of expression for both individuals and societies. 

Using the Korean gamers as an example, digital games also create a sort of community for society and individuals.  Digital games provide a mean for people to connect through a common interest. It also boosts the economy/certain supporters.through branding.


In one game in America, America's Army, this game supports the army society and encourages people to join the army or provides them with insight into what soldiers in the army do. The game is changing attitudes about the army, ultimately increasing enrollment rates.

According to the film, Gamer Revolution, is there any evidence that digital games can encourage aggressive values and antisocial actions in the real world? Do you agree?

The film did not provide any concrete information that digital games could encourage aggressive values or antisocial actions in the real world. There was one researcher, Weber who found that there was a connection between aggressive action and aggressive brain activity but not behavior. 
The film also talked about a lawyer who claimed there was a connection between the actions and behavior but the film didn't really go into it.


Should governments have the right to ban certain games? Why or why not?

It depends... In America for instance, no. Because the army/government have created and encourage the usage of America's Army, the government should not have the right to ban certain games because they are promoting the usage of their own violent game. Other countries though, countries with government that don't promote violent videogames have the right to ban certain games because they are not promoting violent games themselves.

Case Study:

During our class discussion, I had the opportunity to talk with "Student A."  Student A enjoys playing the SIMS because he/she enjoys being able to create almost anything and have control over the characters' actions and lives. He/she found that some of the characters' actions that he/she weren't able to control were sometimes questionable.

Mouchette

So this website, Mouchette, is rather odd. It's 'out there' in terms of websites. I'm not really sure what the purpose is, but the visual and audio make me question the purpose and intention of the creator. In my opinion, I don't think there is a purpose of this website. Although the website says a 13-year old girl created this website, I don't believe it (Later to find out, her artwork is in an art gallery in Japan--> not a real identity. So that leads me to ask why does she want our own identity if she's using a fake one?). 

The flash media throughout the website requires a wealth of knowledge and then there are frequent sexual references throughout the website. I just don't see a 13 year old creating this. In our class discussion her age came up- is 'she' just a character/online identity? Probably.

The colors and images that Mouchette uses is rather old-looking. It reminds me of my first computer, a Windows 90 (?). It's very interactive and uses flash but doesn't seem to match my understanding of modern internet usage. 

It's also interesting because she frequently asks for your information- your email, your name, etc. Why does this anonymous person need this information? She also discusses 'sensitive' topics like suicide and asks the viewer what the best way to kill yourself if you're under 13.

Some pages, like Blind Shells, reminds me of jodi, which we discussed last week. It's rather random and the viewer is able to choose what and how they view something, It's interesting how both Mouchette and Jodi give the viewer control on what they see on a specific website. It's making the viewer and active viewer rather than a passive viewer.

This website is controversial because it looks at rather tough subjects in a light way. The creator doesn't seem to care about suicide, sex, or death and how people emotionally react to them. The creator looks at these with an odd-outlook and doesn't seem to take these matters seriously, which I think hurts the overall website. 

My Online Identities

I have about five or six online identities- Facebook, Twitter, my Hong Kong Blog, this blog, another personal blog, and my 'lurker' identity. As I was discussing with my classmates, my Facebook page is the closest identity to my real-person identity. I'm not sure why, but I am able to share/more willing to share more things on Facebook than on other sites).

My Twitter account is rather a mix of my different accounts- I tweet about some daily occurrences about my time in Hong Kong, sometimes I update about crew (when I'm at HWS) and sometimes I tweet about other random things.  

My Hong Kong blog is catered to talk about my experiences during my semester abroad in Hong Kong- I try and focus on the details and descriptions of my experiences so those at home are able to understand my daily happenings.  

As I am sure you can already tell, this class blog focuses on things that relate to class. You won't find things about my personal life but you will find my opinions about digital media here. The writings here are mainly academic and for academic purposes even though they do incorporate social media.

My other personal blog is basically for my own purposes, rants and raves. Nobody knows about it or reads it, but it is out there on the Internet. It has a focus but I rarely update it- usually once every month. If it's found, it's found, but I haven't really given the link out like I have with my Hong Kong blog.

My final online identity is what I call a 'lurker.' As a lurker I read blogs but never comment or participate in them. There are about 6-8 blogs that I read daily and have for over a year, but I have never commented on them. I like to sit back and read about their lives and continue with my own. Since I don't have a blog that they can comment back on I feel like if I were to comment, it'd be a one-way conversation (even though it isn't, but that's another story) so I am not inclined to comment. Maybe if I ever release my other personal blog or create another blog then I might leave my 'lurker' status behind, but only time will tell.

Creative Culture

Do you remember the days when you had to do a presentation for school or work relying on just Powerpoint? And how boring they were? Youtube didn’t exist so you couldn’t rely on an outside video to further emphasize your point or entertain your audience. Since it’s establishment, Youtube and other video-sharing sites have enhanced creative culture. Video-sharing sites have added a new level to creative culture. They’ve changed the way we look at videos and video making and give everybody the chance to be a filmmaker; they are allowing everyday humans to create videos on topics they are interested in and share them with the rest of the world.

As Marek argues in “Creativity meets Circulation: Internet, amateurs and the process of evolution,” there are different types of users with different aims, professionals and amateurs; “The professional user can be an institution or an individual. The crucial distinction is that a professional user acts strategically. This means that a professional user publishes a video in order to achieve a certain goal - mostly a commercial one” (Marek 2). Despite the different aims, both professionals and amateurs aim to show their video to the world; they want to share their creative culture. Youtube and other video-sharing sites have also created a new platform for video makers, Marek argues; “a small but nonetheless very important group of users that is somehow located between the group of professionals and the group of amateurs, the so called Internet-celebrities, i.e. individuals that have gained a great reputation within the Internet community” (Marek 3). These Internet celebrities use their creativity to enhance the creative culture of the world. Internet celebrities like Chris Crocker (‘Leave Britney Alone’) and the creator of the Potter Puppet Pals series take a pop culture phenomenon and use their own creativity to shed the subject in a different light. Without Youtube or other video-sharing sites, we would not have seen these different viewpoints.

Video sharing sites like Youtube enhance creative culture. They offer a free platform for human beings to visually and audibly voice their point of view. Without these sites we would still be restricted to words, and although words are powerful, sometimes watching a video can get a point across a larger audience better- actions speak louder than words.

'Leave Britney Alone"

Chris Crocker’s Youtube video, “Leave Britney Alone’ has become a Youtube phenomena. Although he is just sitting in front of a sheet or curtain emotionally voicing his opinions, it has received more than 34 million views (34, 259, 989 to be exact as of October 10, 2010) since being published on September 7, 2007. Crocker’s simple video yet intriguing execution and insightful message and has allured viewers for more than 3 years.


The video itself is of rather low quality. It is evident that he is sitting in front of the camera, or even possibly holding the camera with his hand and recording this. There is very little to no physical movement, except wiping his tears; the background, a sheet is very plain and bland. But did Crocker plan this simple set so the viewer would focus on his message, to leave Britney alone? With very little overall movement, the viewer is able to focus on Crocker’s emotion and narrative. Crocker’s emotions provide more insight to his message than the background and setting; there are no light changes to distract the viewer’s eye to something else; the viewer is focused on Crocker.

The narrative itself can be seen as powerful. It entices the audience to listen to his concerns for Britney Spears, as the life of Britney Spears is one that has been followed by the mass media for years; the whole world is watching and critiquing every step she takes. In addition, Crocker raises some interesting socio-cultural issues. Although he is mainly concerned with giving Britney her necessary space for recovery, it raises the question of privacy and celebrity status. Although a celebrity is a human being and has the same right to privacy, he/she lives in the limelight and we as ‘viewers’ or non-celebrity status human beings are intrigued by their rich lifestyles. Where do we draw the line for celebrities? Why are we so intrigued in their lifestyle? Why are we willing to pay money to read or watch about their daily habits? Why are we so willing to spend time following celebrities around when there are homeless people starving on the street? Why give out money to celebrities or media outlets that take advantage of celebrities when they already have enough money?

The attention the ‘Leave Britney Alone’ video has received from the media is rightfully earned. It goes to show that many human beings acknowledge our love and intrigue for information about celebrities is way too intense and we must draw a line somewhere in terms of respecting privacy, but we are hesitant to do so. With so many views, I wonder how this will, if it does at all, affect Lindsay Lohan’s current personal troubles. Currently going through some rough waters, Lohan probably also needs to be out of the limelight and media; the question though, is will she? Will our desire for information about her life and the money we are willing to spend on it triumph her need for privacy?

"Mission to Earth"


1. Using "Mission to Earth" as an example, not what is new or different about digital cinema compared to traditional filmmaking. Consider the story and appearance of the film.

"Mission to Earth" was quite an interesting film. While I was talking with another student about the film, I mentioned that I was glad to have a bit of the background info/plot before watching the movie because then I was able to focus more on the images rather than the narration. Without this information, I am sure I would have been more focused on the plot and would have missed out on a lot of the art and aspects of digital cinema presented.   

The appearance of the film was the first thing I noticed that was different from traditional filmmaking. I was surprised to see 2-4 boxes with different images/happenings going on at the same time. Throughout the film, I noticed different things with these boxes. First, there was always one box that was larger than the other boxes, and it was in this box that the main character actions, the immigrant woman, were portrayed. This box was also very plain and bland color-wise, and rather still as it barely portrayed the woman's actions. In the smaller side boxes, there were frequent animations with symbols, signs and a variety of color. 

Another aspect of the film that I noticed was the narration and woman's actions. Unlike tradition filmmaking, every verbal aspect of this film was given by a 'voice of God' narrator. As viewers, we never saw this narrator, but he told us everything we really need to know. On the other hand, we never heard from this immigrant woman, but she showed us everything the narrator told us. It was interesting to see these two pieces work together. In addition, we never saw the immigrant woman interact with any other human beings. The narrator told us of two instances when she interacted with humans, yet we never saw these, probably to further show her distance from the rest of society/Earth.

One final thing that struck me as being different from traditional filmmaking was the piecing together of the film clips and the 'pauses' to do so. When the film started playing and then froze to 'find a new clip' I thought it was a scratch on the DVD, but I was rather surprised to learn that this was normal for this film. I found this to be an interesting way to grab the audiences' attention. It also gave the audience a moment to collect their thoughts on the film and what they had just seen. 

2. What other art forms does this film remind you of? Explain the similarity.

I am still trying to decide what other kinds of art this film reminds me of- I think that because it is was so obscure and different that it can relate to many different art forms. One thing that "Mission to Earth" reminded me of was a type of adventure book that I used to read when I was younger. If I remember correctly they were called, "Choose Your Own Adventure" and as the reader you were able to choose what the main character would do in certain situations. For example at the end of a road if you wanted the character to turn left you would turn to page 54, if you wanted them to turn right you would turn to page 96, but if you wanted them to turn around you would go to page 154. These books provided the reader with some control of the situations, which reminds me of the DVD controlling what we, as viewers of "Mission to Earth" see. Since each viewing is different and the DVD choose what we see, the images and boxes portrayed throughout the movie provide a different meaning each time.


3. Did you like the film?
 
Yes. Although it was rather obscure and different, I thought it was a very interesting film. It discusses some interesting topics, including life on different planets, immigrants, and society from a different point of view. Relying on digital media rather than traditional filmmaking allowed the filmmaker to put a different spin on the typical 'outsider' story. In addition, I found the ending to be a cliffhanger, as it wasn't too clear on what the immigrant woman decided to do, exciting as it gave some freedom to the viewer to make up his/her mind about the woman's choice.

1. What are some photographic effects that can be achieved using digital or analog (darkroom, film, lights etc) technology?
Although digital photography is believed to be something new, the techniques and abilities of digital photography are similar to those of analog photography. Surprisingly, in both digital and analog photography the photographer and or editor has the ability to change the light in a photo. While an analog photo requires this do be done in a darkroom, digital photography can be changed in computer programs like Photoshop and iPhoto.

2. What are some photographic techniques that can only be achieved using digital technology?
 Morphing/detailed inventions of things that have never existed.

3. What is the difference between analog photography and digital photography?
 The main difference between digital photography and analog photography is light. Digital photography relies on light sensors to capture the image while analog photography uses an exposure method on light sensitive film. Analog photography also relies chemicals to capture images, in addition to light. Film and memory card

Wikipedia!


Sharing knowledge is a dialogue; it’s not a one-way street where one is only sharing information and one is receiving. As a result, as the “World Knowledge Advisor” I have chosen Wikipedia to be our encyclopedia from here on out.

Since 2001, Wikipedia has become the world famous “free encyclopedia that anyone can edit” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia). Although there have been numerous controversies and fights over the accuracy of Wikipedia, Wikipedia has built a strong and intelligent community that confirm/check information. Wikipedia only has one worker, the software developer, while the editors and checkers are all volunteers. Giving up one’s free time shows that these people want to provide this information to the world; they’re not selfish or in it for the money, but rather for the knowledge of all human beings.
Wikipedia provides free access to all of human knowledge, ultimately providing free knowledge to anyone on anything. No fees or hidden costs- just knowledge. Furthermore it provides a neutral point of view. Since the writers and editors of Wikipedia are everyday people just like you and me, they provide both sides of a story, while a for-profit encyclopedia company may edit or revise articles or sides of a story in order to keep shareholders happy.
The information shared on Wikipedia goes through a number of quality tests. Frequent users of Wikipedia have created a small community of 600-1,000 persons that do a bulk of the editing and fact checking on Wikipedia. In addition, only 18% of the edits made on Wikipedia pages are by anonymous users. To create a Wikipedia page, one must create a username and page; once a username is created one can provide as much or as little personal background. In randomly looking at some usernames, I came across numerous academic professor and professionals who are professionals in their field. One user, POL089, states on his/her personal page, “I do my best to make contributions that are true, relevant, and impartial, and sometimes to rewrite paragraphs in a better way. My rewrites don't often get reverted or changed radically, so presumably they are considered an improvement” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Pol098). Most, if not all, users edit Wikipedia pages to improve the information, rather than hurt it.
Wikipedia is the better encyclopedia because it is a “a free, web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopedia” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia). It doesn’t require one to be a professional in a field or have a M.D. or P.h.D. after his or her name, because sometimes professionals don’t always know everything. As a collaborative encyclopedia, Wikipedia allows people from a variety of backgrounds to come together to share knowledge and information with the rest of the world. It starts a dialogue about a specific topic and encourages the rest of the world to part-take in this dialogue. As a multilingual encyclopedia, Wikipedia is not an exclusive encyclopedia; one does not need to know English to understand the text. Articles in Spanish, Dutch, French, Portuguese and Chinese are just the beginning of Wikipedia’s multilingual text.  
Just as in the classroom where discussion is as important, if not more important than a lecture, the free, collaborative and multilingual dialogue that Wikipedia creates and encourages is more important than the typical and standard Encyclopaedia Brittanica.

Modern Times

After watching the clip from "Modern Times," I was able to see both the positive and negative effects of technology on both Charlie Chaplin and myself.

In "Modern Times," Charlie Chaplin is controlled by the technology he works with. The machine is constantly providing work for Charlie and at times he is struggling to keep up with the machine. As I discussed with a classmate during the exercise, the machine controls Charlie, Charlie doesn't control the machine. In addition, the machine isn't for Charlie's benefit, in fact it negatively effects him and his behavior. For example, when he stops working, his hands and body are still doing the motions of his job and it is a struggle for him to stop. The machines positively impact the boss, and only the boss, because he is able to make more products, thus allowing for more profit.

When the men bring in the lunch machine for him to try out, it seems like a good idea as it provides a way of multitasking and producing more product. Unfortunately though, this machine does not help, but rather creates more problems. In addition, the machine is just awkward for Charlie; he has no control over what he is being fed or when as food is being shoved in his face throughout the experiment.  As seen in "Modern Times," technology seems to have a negative impact on Charlie Chaplin's life, as he no longer has control over even the littlest things in his life.

In comparison, technology has had a positive impact on my own life. In my everyday life, I frequently rely on my computer, cellphone, and iPod for various things. As an exchange student at Lingnan University, I use my computer to stay in touch with my friends and family at home. Frequent emails, video chats, IMs, and Facebook keep my connected even though I am halfway around the world. Furthermore, with my cellphone, I am able to keep in touch with friends in Hong Kong. Since my cellphone from the U.S. does not work here in Hong Kong, I rely on my Hong Kong phone and phone number to keep in contact with local students.

Unlike Charlie Chaplin, I feel like I have power and control over the machines and technology I use. When I step away from the machines, I am okay; I am not shaking or trembling like Charlie, I am able to move on with my life.

Technology is a great tool, though one must be able to have control and power over the machine and oneself.

Introductions!


 Hi! I'm Sara.


I'm a Junior at Hobart and William Smith (HWS) Colleges in Geneva, New York but I am currently studying abroad at Lingnan University. I am double majoring in Writing and Rhetoric and Media and Society; I am looking to combine the two to work in communications.

Digital media is a huge part of my life- I am almost always connected to my phone or computer; I frequently check Facebook, Twitter, send emails, read and write blogs, watch Youtube videos and more. I remember one of my teachers in high school saying "Remember what presentations used to be like without Youtube?" Digital media plays a huge role in everyday life- it not effects how one sees something but also allows one to see things in a different way. No longer are newspapers just words- now there are videos, blogs and slideshows to accompany articles. With digital media, the world is becoming more connected and further educated. I've taken numerous courses where a requirement is a blog, forcing the students and teacher to stay connected and communicate in a different way. Digital media is allowing human beings to think outside the box of what is normal.

I'm originally from outside of Boston, Massachusetts, but have been very fortunate to have traveled throughout high school. I've been to China (once before studying abroad in HK), Europe, South America and Antarctica.
